Membership now opened for the walking track!

Ballingarry now has a superb, all weather, walking track on the GAA club premises. Walk, jog or run, you can do it all and enjoy exercising in the fresh air, away from road traffic.

In order to maintain the track, to cover insurance for all users and to allow for a new lighting solution, we would like all users of the track to take up a Knockshe Club Membership.

The 2021 membership is €20 for an individual or €50 for a family. The money we receive is going to be spent enhancing the track and installing a new lighting system to allow everyone use it on the dark nights and not just Wednesday night.

To become a member: Download the membership form below and fill it in,  email it to secretary.knockshegowna.tipperary@gaa.ie or contact Martin Costello (0868503212).

A Brief History

Knockshegowna GAA Club was founded in 1934. Indeed this was also the year the Club enjoyed its first success, defeating Mulcaire Rovers in the North Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship. The final was played in the Showgrounds in Nenagh. During this time Knockshe played and trained at the Pike. The Club relocated to the Turla for a number of years in the late 40’s.

The 1960’s was a very successful decade for the Club. Knockshe won North Intermediate titles in 1960 & 1961. In 1969 the Club followed up their victory in the North Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship by defeating Thurles Fennelly’s to win its’ first ever County Final. By this time Knockshe had moved to ‘Cahalans field’ at Glenview, Ballingarry .

North Junior ‘A’ titles were also achieved in ’57, ’72, ’74, 88, 89, ’93, 2006, 2013 & 2015. In 1993 Knockshe captured the Junior ‘A’ County Final, defeating Moyle Rovers in Holycross. County honours returned again in 2006 when Knockshe defeated Holycross Ballycahill in Dolla.

The Club has twice reached the Munster Junior Hurling Final, being defeated in both 2005 & 2006 by the eventual All-Ireland Champions.

As a result of our small catchment area and rural population our Juveniles have amalgamated with neighbouring Clubs throughout our history. North and County titles were achieved with Lorrha U21’s in 1965 & 1966. Knockshe amalgamated with Borrisokane (called Erins Hope) in the 1980’s and 90’s and enjoyed success in all grades. The Club presently enjoys a successful amalgamation with Shannon Rover Juveniles (called Shannon Gaels).

In the mid 1980’s Knockshe moved its home to its current location after purchasing a field from the late Leo O’Meara. The 14th April 1996 was a proud day for the Club when GAA President-elect Joe McDonagh and Bishop Willie Walsh opened the newly built Community Centre at the facility. Since then the Club has upgraded its facilities, by adding state of the art lighting in 2007 followed by the construction of the Stand in 2010.

More recently, we have added a walking track around the pitch for the benefit of the local community!
